Corporate governance means acting in accordance with the principles of responsible company management oriented towards sustainable value creation. In the BMW Group, this aspiration includes all divisions of the BMW Group. The crucial cornerstones of the corporate culture here are:
- Observance of the regulations and the applicable law
- Corporate governance with clear targets directed at the interests of all stakeholders
- Supreme environmental and social standards as well as due diligence in the supply chains
- Transparent reporting and corporate communication
- Cooperation based on trust between Management Board, Supervisory Board and employees

Integrity is part of how we view ourselves.
For the BMW Group, compliance is far more than adhering to the applicable law and in-company regulations. Compliance is part of how we see ourselves as well as a culture of integrity put into practice and a binding framework for all entrepreneurial activities – worldwide.
Our Compliance Management-System (CMS).
The CMS which applies throughout the BMW Group is based on the Prevent-Detect-Respond approach. It defines specific measures of prevention, monitoring, control and reaction. The CMS is based on the risk situation of the company and covers all relevant areas of compliance:
- Prevention of fraud
- Export control
- Prevention of money laundering
- Compliance with antitrust law
- Prevention of corruption
- Human rights
- Data protection
- Technical compliance
OUR TARGETS.
HOLISTIC; MEASURABLE SUSTAINABILITY WITH SPECIFIC TARGETS.
The BMW Group aspires to become the most successful and sustainable premium manufacturer for individual mobility. At the same time we wish to live up to our responsibility in relation to social and ethical standards. At the heart of our specific targets is the reduction of CO2 emissions, the increase in resource efficiency and circularity as well as the significant improvement in social and ecological standards. This is why we established clearly defined targets in July 2020, which we aim to implement by the year 2030.
CO2 reduction
By the year 2030 we are striving to significantly reduce the CO2 emissions in our work by more than 40% per vehicle as compared with 2019. Our long-term objective as a company is to become completely climate neutral. For this reason, we have committed to SBTi and have all short-term CO2 targets validated. By today we are the only car maker with a dedicated CO2 target for the supply chain validated by SBTi (Status February 2023).
Electromobility
We are also focusing on the expansion of electromobility. This is why we want at least 50% of our global vehicle sales to be fully electric in the year 2030. There are over 6,000 public charging stations and over 12,000 charging ports across Canada, all of which can be easily located and navigated to via your BMW iDrive system, or from the My BMW App.
Circularity
Our vehicles are developed so that their components can be extensively recovered and recycled. We call this concept “Design for Recycling”. Through this scheme, we can partly use valuable materials from the recycling process and thus avoid the usage of primary materials.
Environmental and social standards
As a company with global operations we are committed to environmental and social standards – in our own company and when working together with suppliers around the world. Our guidelines, such as the respect for human rights and conventions on occupational safety, are laid down in the BMW Group sustainability standard for the supplier network.
Employees
We know – and also demonstrate – the value of our employees. Through a large number of development and support opportunities, attractive workplaces, health offers and a wide range of diversity programmes, we offer employees an environment that authentically reflects our regard for them.
Society
As a company with global operations, we are aware of our social responsibility. Our commitment is intended to help people and cultures around the world to come closer together and build up a better understanding for the social issues.

INTEGRATED REPORT ON THE STATUS QUO.
The BMW Group views its responsibility as lying in the measurability and transparency of its sustainability reporting. This is why we have been combining our annual report with our sustainability report since 2020 to create an integrated Group report. The BMW Group Report follows the framework structures of the sustainability reporting and is independently certified.
OUR SUSTAINABLE FINANCE STRATEGY.
Sustainability has since become an important criterion in the financial markets. Investors and analysts increasingly consider environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects in their financial decisions. Through EU taxonomy, the European Union is also aiming to classify enterprises on the basis of sustainability criteria.
